Pre-and Post-operative Care of Neurosurgical Patients and the Management of Swollen Brain During the Surgery


Abstract
Pre-and post-operative care of neurosurgical patients and handling of swollen brain during the surgery are described, mostly from the routines of Montreal Neurological Institute, Canada and Neurosurgical Dept. of Koln University Hospital, West Germany, as well as from various literature and author¢¥s own experiences at Pusan University Hospital and Capital ROK Army Hospital, Korea. Among various procedures, the life or death importance.of early detection and prompt treatment of progressive intracranial pressure and deterioration of air-way patency are repeatedly stressed and described. The other important subjects treated are: fluid balance, bowel and bladder care, seizure management, -the position of patient and drainage problems.
The early detection and prompt management of complications are stressed and described individually. Finally author stresses the essentiality of meticulous, gentle and complete surgery in the application of various pre-and post- operative care described.
